SKINCARE Blog: My First Dermaplaning Facial

Suffering from Cystic acne is a bummer, not only because it brings your confidence level down, but it leaves awful scars behind as a reminder. I was lucky enough to bypass acne during my teen years, but now here I am in my late twenties having little to no knowledge about how to treat my problem skin. I decided to put matters into my own hands and reach out to a professional, Celeste Ortiz a licensed Aesthetician with 12 years of experience to help me understand and tackle my problem skin.

First things first, Celeste explained the importance of having my skin analyzed in order for my symptoms to be properly treated. I was directed to have a seat and rest my face into a “skin scanner” (this was the coolest experience). Photographs were taken of my face showing surface problems like post inflammatory redness, sun damage, wrinkles, large pores as well as internal skin issues like dead skin cells, UV pigmentation, brown spots produced by the body like hormones, post inflammatory genetics, red areas, deadly capillaries, broken blood vessels and post inflammatory scarring. The overview is basically a baseline used to choose which products or treatments would be best for my skin type. These results are then compared to see the changes in my skin.

After my skin was analyzed I opened up to Celeste about my struggle with acne and the scarring. Celeste suggested we start off with a facial, she explained that this will allow her to understand my skin type, see how my skin responds, if I am quick to flush, and my skin’s sensitivity. Also, Celeste added that she prefers to start off with a facial as opposed to starting off with laser, microderms or anything more aggressive. The products Celeste used to perform the facial are pharmaceutical grade skin care which can only be carried and sold in a medical office. These products are more superior than products you can purchase outside of a medical setting because they have a higher active ingredient, have to abide by strict rules and show a change at a cellular level as opposed to products you can buy at a store. Once the facial was performed, Celeste suggested dermaplaning.  Dermaplaning was a procedure I was not familiar with. Which is why I wanted to share not only my personal experience, but fill you in on the benefits and most frequently asked questions regarding dermaplaning.

Benefits Of Dermaplaning

  • Provides deeper product penetration
  • Removes soft facial hair that traps dirt and oils
  • Promotes smoother skin
  • Safe procedure for removing dead skin cells and “peachfuzz”
  • Reduces the appearance of acne scars
  • Diminishes the look of fine lines
  • Works on all skin types

The purpose of a derma planning facial is to exfoliate and get rid of the top layer of the skin. This will immediately improve your skin’s texture, tone and remove any peach fuzz. Removing this will allow your makeup to set really nice for a couple weeks post treatment. The tool that Celeste used to manually remove my dead skin and peachfuzz is a scalpel.

Does Dermaplaning Hurt?

First and foremost, it does not hurt. Waxing and threading have made it seem like in order for hair removal to be effective, it has to hurt. This is not the case with dermaplaning, it is entirely painless but just as effective when it comes to getting rid of facial hair.

Can Dermaplaning Cause Acne?

Like most exfoliation techniques, dermaplaning prevents breakouts rather than cause them. While dermaplaning can’t be performed on skin with active acne, it will prevent clogged pores and pimples from forming. Which leads to less dead skin and fewer breakouts.

Does Dermaplaning Help With Blackheads?

Is Dermaplaning Good For Rosacea?

Dermaplaning provides an alternative to chemical peels or microdermabrasion and is a good choice for anyone who has facial hair as well as extremely sensitive skin, redness/rosacea or visible facial veins.

Does Dermaplaning Remove Dark Spots?

Like shaving, dermaplaning removes fine facial hair and dead skin on the face with a blade, instantly revealing smoother and softer skin. When performed regularly, dermaplaning helps refine and brighten the skin, diminish the appearance of dark spots and fine lines and enhance product penetration.

How Long Does It Take To Recover From Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a quick, effective procedure that normally takes 45 minutes to complete. It is recommended that patients space treatments approximately two to four weeks apart for the best results.

Is Dermaplaning Bad For Skin?

Dermaplaning is recommended for all skin types - even people with sun damage, fine lines, very dry skin and dull skin.

How Much Does It Cost For Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning prices range from $75 to $150 and up. Most doctor’s offices or medispas that have it on the menu will offer it with a facial because it allows the other products to sink deeper into the skin with the aim of quicker or better results.

My Experience:

Dermaplaning was completely painless. Celeste made me feel comfortable and never tugged my skin or caused me any pain during the procedure. I actually enjoyed the feeling of the scalpel slightly grazing my face to be quite honest. My skin immediately felt softer and smoother than before. Celeste also let me know that I wouldn't have to exfoliate my face for 7 days (Yay). The following morning I washed my face and noticed that my oil-to-foam facial cleanser lathered up onto my skin immediately. Unlike prior to derma planning, I would feel and notice that the oil would soak onto my facial hair, thus making it harder for the oil to turn into foam. Also, my foundation, bronzer and blush blended onto my face so much more seamlessly than before. I wasn't having to apply so much pressure onto my skin to blend my makeup either. As far as acne, I also noticed that my scars faded as well. I even had less frequent breakouts to almost no breakouts in my jawline area.
